If you’re worried this is about to turn into a preachy, let’s go on a diet post, you don’t know me very well. What it really is, is me telling you I have got to do better {and maybe you feel like that, too}. I realized not too long ago that the only kinds of food readily at my disposal were crackers, chip, cookies…you get the idea. Plus, I am notorious for buying the good stuff, tucking it away in the pantry and forgetting all about it.
Then the other day, as I was thumbing through my issue of Cooking Light magazine, I saw an article on using whole grains. What struck me was the presentation. They were tucked away in mason jars with chalkboard labels. Not only were they in easy reach but they also fun to look at. Two things that make you more likely to dig into them!
I had recently gotten some 5 Grain Quinoa {Keen-WAH – in case you were wondering!}, Hemp Seeds and Chia Seeds in an effort to eat better. But as usual, they were tucked away in the pantry. I had some adorable jars left over from another project and a great idea occurred to me.
I grabbed my chalkboard vinyl and proceeded to cut some labels for my new healthy food jars. If you don’t have vinyl or an electronic cutting tool, you could also use black contact paper and easily cut some labels with scissors.
I always have chalk on hand because I love chalkboards so much. And I don’t know about you but a clean, organized and beautiful kitchen makes me want to keep going back in there – instead of avoiding it like the plague!
Once my labels were done I popped them on my jars and poured all that healthy goodness in!
Quinoa – is great in salads and soups or even as a side dish. One serving has 6g of protein, is high in fiber and is a good source of iron. Plus, it’s ready in 20 mins!
Hemp Hearts – are raw shelled hemp seeds and are packed with nutrition. Just 3 tbsp = 10g of Protein! You can sprinkle them on salad, cereal and yogurt. {Refrigerate after opening!}
Chia Seeds – possibly one of most favorite new discoveries. These teeny tiny and ancient grains were prized by the Aztecs for stamina and well-being. You can use them to thicken sauces without affecting taste, mix into smoothies, sprinkle on top of oatmeal, granola, cereal or yogurt, or use in the place of eggs in your favorite recipe for nutritious vegan delight. Who knew something so little could be so amazing!
So today I get to feel good for three reasons – my kitchen is healthier, prettier and better organized.

Eating healthy doesn’t seem quite so bad when it looks that cute 😉 Love the chalk labels!

I just bought the exact same jars a few weeks ago so that I could keep healthy grains in view in hopes that it would inspire me to choose them more often. I LOVE the way they look on our counter. Even my husband commented positively. 🙂
