This adorable DIY Pencil Desk Organizer is so easy to make and it’s a perfect back to school project for the little people in your life or even a special teacher or two. Plus, it’s so easy and cheap to make you might as well make more than one!
Just the other day I posted my first Back to School post on social media and I’m pretty sure it caught some shade. Mostly because even if you’re ready you’re not ready but also because some of you are lucky enough to start back in September like we did in the good ol days! Us? We start at the beginning of August! Ugh. I know. Now, if only all the heat would disappear too I’d be ok with it.
Curious how I took a simple to 2 x 4 and turned it into…this?
Here’s everything you need to know to create your own!
DIY Pencil Desk Organizer
Items needed:
- Americana Multi-Surface Satin Acrylics 2oz – School Bus
- Americana Multi-Surface Satin Acrylics 2oz – Black Tie
- Americana Multi-Surface Satin Acrylics 2oz – Shrimp
- Americana Multi-Surface Metallics 2oz – Silver
- 18″ 2×4 Wood
- Saw
- Drill
- 1″ Spade Bit
- Sander
- Painters Tape
- Light Wood Stain
Instructions:
Measure approximate 3″ from the end of your 2×4 and mark. This will be the tip of your pencil.
Determine the size of your pencil tip and draw out angles from there.
Use your saw to cut away the triangles to form the tip.
With a 1″ spade bit drill out the holes for your organizer. I made 7 holes, 1″ apart and approximately 3″ deep.
Thoroughly sand your piece paying special attention to the eraser end to be sure you get that rounded look.
Now it’s time for stain. I chose a light one to mimic the look of a real pencil.
I taped off the eraser section (shrimp), tip and lead (black tie) section and the main pencil section (school bus).
I painted these sections first and allowed to dry.
Finally, I painted the silver section of the ‘eraser holder’.
Once that’s dry, you’re all done. You could add some text if you like or just leave it plain. Either way, it’s a super cute way to start the new school year!
If you’re lucky, you’ve got a lot more time to sit back, relax and enjoy Summer. But don’t get too comfy of it might sneak up on you like it always does me!
