When I was still living at home I begged my mother for a set of black lacquer furniture. It took a few years but she finally complied. I have always loved black. It isn’t black lacquer anymore but I still have black furniture in my master bedroom. Black is classic and timeless and matte black is the new modern. Here are 10 ways to decorate with matte black in your home whether your style is modern, rustic or, like me, a combination of the two.
Focal Wall
If you aren’t sure how use it in your own space or you’re worried about it being overwhelming, start with a black focal wall. Pair it will light colored furnishings and decor and watch them pop against the dramatic background.

Some of my favorite furniture pieces are also some of my very first, like this black Pottery Barn inspired dresser and a more modern version with brass pulls. Dressing up a vintage piece of furniture with paint is an easy to incorporate matte black. Try a muted black like this one from Farrow & Ball.

I love these matte black planters and they remind me of another reason I love black, it’s clean but stunning in its simplicity.
I love matte black paired with exposed brick, crisp whites and warm wood tones and generally any natural elements, like plants. Add a matte black pendant, like the Zuo Bronze Matte Ceiling Lamp, over a wood table like we did in our Modern Farmhouse Dining Room Makeover or a beautiful matte black hexagon tile in a bath.

Another gorgeous way with matte black is kitchen cabinets. If you’re nervous about all black cabinets try dark lower cabinets and light uppers. A black kitchen island also makes a stunning focal point.
Kitchen Faucet
We’ve spent a lot of time updating our home but we have two very important spaces left; our kitchen and master bath. Ever since we added the black elements to our new dining room I realize it’s my go-to for the rest of our spaces as well, like our kitchen. This matte black faucet by Moen would be a stunner with those butcher block counter tops and vintage apron sink that envision there.
Some other fun ways, which I didn’t even realize existed until recently, to incorporate matte black is this KitchenAid Mixer from Crate and Barrel and this amazing Refrigerator from Jenn-Air.
My latest obsessions in matte black are the Flatware from West Elm and these Dinner Plates from Target. I am so inspired with all these possibilities I can’t wait to get started on our new spaces. Are you inspired to add the new modern to your decor?
