DIY Minecraft Birthday Party | How to Pull off an Awesome Party with Limited Resources

This post may contain affiliate links. Please see my disclosure for info.

DIY Minecraft Birthday Party

Pulling off this Minecraft birthday party was harder {initially} than it might look at first glance. A miracle of Pinterest, Photoshop and lots and lots of crepe paper streamers!

With life as busy as it can be these days grabbing up at least a few pre-made supplies or decorations is usually a must. Problem? Minecraft party supplies do. not. exist.

The good news? They are crazy easy to make and oh so much fun! Here are the details of my DIY Minecraft Party.

DIY Minecraft Birthday Party
First, everyone needed shirts! The birthday boy got a I Porkchop Minecraft T-shirt because he really does porkchop Minecraft.
In fact, I porkchop it, too.
I also made the birthday boy, his little brother and my niece some extra special Creeper t-shirts using Tulip Twilight Shimmer Transfer Sheets in black glitter for the Creeper faces.

DIY Minecraft Birthday Party

For our party guests’ party favors, I used Silhouette Smooth Heat Transfer Vinyl and easily cut the faces with my Silhouette machine. These were a huge hit with our Minecraft loving friends! Download the SVG file to use with your Silhouette right here: Cuttable File Creeper Face for Silhouette

Don’t have a vinyl cutting machine? No problem! Visit my guest post on Lil Luna.com today for an easy way to DIY your own creeper T’s without any special tools!

DIY Minecraft Birthday Party
Decorations were simple with black balloons and crepe paper spiders.
DIY Minecraft Birthday Party
Nether Portals made from the black and purple crepe paper in our archways for added fun.
DIY Minecraft Birthday Party
My soon-to-be 10-year-old had fun helping me draw the faces on our Creeper sprites (aka Creeper Juice).
DIY Minecraft Birthday Party
And since I already had the creeper face pattern saved as a cut-able file in my Silhouette, I went ahead and cut some creeper faces out using my regular black vinyl. Voila’! Creeper balloons!
You’ll want to place your vinyl faces onto the balloons last minute. As the balloons lose air, they shrink {doh!}, making the faces wrinkle. You don’t want wrinkly Creepers.
DIY Minecraft Birthday Party

I can honestly tell you, I had the most fun making this party food! It was easy and just plain fun to look at.

I adored the Tissue Grass Mats for the table runners. They came in a package of 2 making them around $2.50 each and I only needed 3 to cover the length of my farmtable that seats 10. I used the other ones on the food tables to dress them up. Easy, easy, easy!

DIY Minecraft Birthday Party
I made Dirt Clod Brownies with buttercream “Grass” frosting and topped them with Creeper printables.
DIY Minecraft Birthday Party
Possibly the most amazing party food ever, especially for children, were these Giant Campfire Marshmallows. Dipped in a little red candy coating and topped with upside down white chocolate morsels. See! Like I said, easy and adorable!
DIY Minecraft Birthday Party
Taste tested and approved!
DIY Minecraft Birthday Party
We had regular ol’ kid friendly foods….

DIY Minecraft Birthday Party
We just “dressed” them in fun Minecraft disguises.
DIY Minecraft Birthday Party
Guaranteed to make things easier for Mom and sure not to go to waste!

DIY Minecraft Birthday Party
Rice Krispie treats tinted with a dash of cocoa powder and black food coloring and pressed into haphazardly shaped lumps. When has party food ever been this easy?
DIY Minecraft Birthday Party
We used Swedish Fish but any gummy fish, especially the blue ones, will do.
DIY Minecraft Birthday Party
Chunks of cheese mimic lava blocks. You’ll save yourself some money if you buy the Colby Jack block of cheese and cube it yourself.
DIY Minecraft Birthday Party

Go ahead. Give your child permission to eat sticks.
Best. Party. Ever.
DIY Minecraft Birthday Party
My child saw this vanilla ice cream and orange sherbet combo at the store and insisted he have it at his party. With the carrot cake he also requested. I compromised and told him, let’s turn it into Lava Bucket Punch!
DIY Minecraft Birthday Party
Best {and yummiest} idea ever!
{EDITED:  Many of you have asked me for “my Lava Punch Recipe”. I swear, all I did was dump in the Vanilla Orange Sherbet (pictured above) then poured the Strawberry Soda (also pictured above) on top of it. It turned out awesome looking all by itself and totally by accident. Have fun!}
DIY Minecraft Birthday Party
And possibly my highest party achievement ever – Getting them to do Science at a birthday party. On purpose. And enjoying it!
DIY Minecraft Birthday Party
Of course, when Science means heading over to the Enchantment Table and concocting an exploding potion that sends soda 20 feet in the air, it winds up looking more like fun than school work.
DIY Minecraft Birthday Party
And they made their own Slimes. But only if they followed the potion directions correctly!
DIY Minecraft Birthday Party
That took teamwork!

DIY Minecraft Birthday Party
It wasn’t long before they had it down and then they wouldn’t stop making slime.
DIY Minecraft Birthday Party

That is until we said, Pinata time!
DIY Minecraft Birthday Party
And what else do you do for a tweenage birthday party that doesn’t seem lame? Well, believe it or not, they all loved jammin’ to Kidz Bop. Plus, I downloaded several Minecraft parody songs that my child is obsessed with and that was a big hit, too!

DIY Minecraft Birthday PartyDIY Minecraft Birthday Party
DIY Minecraft Birthday Party

I will never get tired of this child’s present opening faces! The mouth wide open directly correlated with receiving an ipod for his birthday. The perfect place to download all of that Minecraft music we played at his party.
DIY Minecraft Birthday Party
Have Sumo Cake!
 DIY Minecraft Birthday Party

Some Minecraft Carrot Cake, if you’re into it. You might even like my version of this tried and true recipe even if you don’t usually like carrot cake. I’ll be sharing that recipe with you soon!

This was, by far, the easiest birthday cake I’ve ever made. I just poured half of the cake batter into a square pan and the other half in another and baked. Covered with icing as usual then topped it with randomly shaped squares cut from a Wilton Sugar Sheet in red to mimic a real Minecraft cake. Only I imagine this one tastes much better.

 DIY Minecraft Birthday Party

In addition to our t-shirt party favors, we also filled these Gold Bar Foil Favor Boxes with candy for them to take home. So they ended up leaving with a t-shirt, a jar of slime and a ton of candy for less than I used to spend on those pre-filled party favor boxes.

And what do you get a Minecraft lover anyway? Well, I’ll tell you this – none of it is cheap! Take this Minecraft Light-Up Redstone Ore, for as pricey as they are, Minecraft products can be even harder to come by. So if you have a Minecraft lover in your life you might be able to justify the price tag. But even if not, you’re now armed for pulling off a pretty awesome, pretty time-saving and pretty easy Minecraft birthday party!

There was so much to share with you about our DIY Minecraft Birthday Party that I’ve broken it down into two posts. Join me later in the week for Part 2 with FREE printables, directions and printables for making your own slime and exploding potion, your own creeper t-shirts and more. So get ready to get your party on!
And if you have absolutely no idea what Minecraft is or just want to brush up on your lingo before your party just visit the Minecraft Wiki page for all you ever wanted to know. And more.
Hope you enjoyed it! And remember to join me later in the week for Part II.

Maybe I missed this somewhere but I’m curious as to where you got the grass for all that? Or did you make it? My stepdaughter is wanting a minecraft party in 3 weeks and I feel like that grass really pulls it all together!

It’s ok Shea! There’s so much in that post it’s easy to overlook some things. I have a link for where I got those grass mats. You will find it just above the picture of the 3-tiered cake plate (with the dirt clod brownies on it). The paragraph starts out like this, “I adored the Tissue Grass Mats for the table runners. They came in a package of 2 making…” The Tissue Grass Mats is hyperlinked, meaning you can just click on the words and it will take you Amazon where I purchased them. Hope this helps! I thought they really pulled it all together, too. One of my favorite things from the day! Thank you!

My son is turning 8 and his world is almost consumed by Minecraft – he has very few other things that he calls hobbies and none of them rank high enough to use for a party theme. After nearly every Christmas present was somehow tied back to MC, I know the scarcity of product and he already has most of what’s available (at least as much as I’m willing to buy for him). So, when he said that he wanted a MC bday party I wasn’t surprised, but I was filled with some dread. That was, until I found your pins and blog! I’m really excited about pulling this together and exercising some creativity – I don’t play the game but this is a way that I can connect to that world with them.
Thank you for all the printables and the how tos.

Well, because I had a store at the time we had those jars to pour paint samples. They were 4oz jars, I believe, with screw on lids. They were purchased from Uline.com but I think you might have to buy them in bulk there. You should be able to find something similar online though. Try Amazon.com. Good luck and thank you!

Dirt Clod Brownies. I’ve not heard of these. Is there a recipe for them, or is it just a boxed brownie/cake mix? I’m thinking of making Rice Krispie Treats with green frosting for the dirt/grass squares, but if I could pull off the brownies, I think it would be better. Thanks!

It’s just a box brownie mix done using the ‘for cake like brownies’ variation. You could also use a chocolate cake mix, too!

HA! Ha! You can totally tell I DON’T play minecraft… Dirt Clods are actually brownies! Not Dirt Clod Brownies! Ha! Ok. So, these brownies look rather thick/tall. Almost like cake. Did you make a specific type of brownie?

Ok for the Large Marshmallows (mushrooms), Where can I find Red Candy Coating, and how do you use it?

Red candy coating is like that stuff you use at Christmas time to dip peanut butter balls in except it’s red. It’s made by Wilton. I got mine at Hobby Lobby but I think they may also have it at WalMart and certainly other retailers. It comes in a white and red bag and there large “chips” of the coating inside. Basically, following package instructions, you just heat, melt and dip. Easy peasy!
