Taking a sweet departure from the usual around here to celebrate my second year participating in the Cookies for Kids’ Cancer event (see below for more info). Last year I created these Double Dark Chocolate + Cherry Black Forest Cookies. This year I’ve added a secret ingredient to traditional chocolate chip cookies to create these Maple Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies – filled with flavor and lots of chocolate chunks.
These cookies are not only delicious but they resonate with me for very personal reasons, too. I got a whole case of brown sugar from Dixie Crystals – their Imperial Sugar plant is just down the road from me in Savannah.
And not only did it inspire me to make these special chocolate chip cookies, but it also inspired to me add a special, secret ingredient.
These days we actually see a lot of that Imperial Sugar plant. You don’t know this, because I haven’t talked about it here before, but just over two years ago my husband essentially lost his job.
It’s a much longer story than that and it’s fraught with heartbreak and frustration because the job search has been one of the greatest struggles of our lives, even with over 20 years of business experience. It was made doubly so since he’d recently completed his master’s degree.
But in a twist of irony that not only proves that God has a sense of humor but that even the best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry, he now finds himself involved in a revival of his own as the manager of a 50+-year-old syrup company.
So my husband drives to that plant at least once a month to pick up ingredients to make his syrups. Hence my special, secret ingredient Maple Butter Syrup, which you can find in local stores here in the south or in the Winters Syrup Shop online.
Life is funny like that sometimes, amiright? Lots of sweet with some big bumps along the way.
I really felt like this cookie recipe spoke to my heart in so many areas right now. Plus, they’re perfect for Valentine’s Day or any day of the week.
They’re sweet and chewy and best made with lots of chocolate chunks.
Of course, the syrup is optional but since it’s been a bit of a life-saver for us these last couple of years, I think you’ll find they make your life a little sweeter, too.
The Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter melted, cooled
- 1 1/2 cups light brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 white sugar
- 2 large eggs, room temperature
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup Winters Maple Butter Syrup
- 3 1/4 cup all purpose flour
- 2 tsp cornstarch
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 cups chocolate chips (I used chunks)
- *1/2 cup maple chips (optional)
- *10 - 15 drops red food coloring or beet juice equivalent (optional)
Instructions
- In a large bowl or stand mixer, stir together sugars and melted, cooled butter.
- Add in eggs one at a time until combined.
- Stir in vanilla extract, maple butter syrup, and food coloring - if using.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, cornstarch, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add flour mixture to wet ingredients stirring after each addition until completely combined.
- Stir in chips just until combined.
- Using a 1 1/2 TBS scoop, scoop out and roll dough into balls. Place on baking sheet covered in parchment paper about 1" apart.
- Chill for 30 mins.
- Bake at 350 for 10 to 12 mins until edges just start to brown.
- Allow to cool on parchment paper until completely cooled. Cookies will be soft and chewy!
- Enjoy!
Cookies for Kids’ Cancer Fundraiser
This is the third year for our Valentine’s event! We want to make a difference in the fight against pediatric cancer!
Did you know that cancer is the #1 cause of death of children by disease in the U.S.? There are 40,000 U.S. children actively battling cancer right now. With less than 4% of the National Cancer Institute’s budget going to all childhood cancer combined, I knew it was important for me to get involved.
Help us make a difference by donating to Cookies for Kids’ Cancer! Our goal is to raise at least $3000. Because these three companies: Dixie Crystals, Mediavine and OXO have each pledged to match our donations raised through this campaign up to $3000!
Thanks to many of you, we have reached our goal. You can still donate and help us make an even bigger difference!
Please consider making a donation to support this sweet cause and see below for more delicious recipes.
And if you’re in the market for a new cookie jar, please allow me to recommend this hobnail jar from Big Lots. It was $5!!
