When my youngest was very little we realized that almost anything that came in contact with his sensitive skin would cause a reaction. It changed the way we did laundry, what we ate and how we looked at our home’s environment. The irony was we had the most difficult time convincing our well-meaning families. They just assumed we were behaving like first-time parents and virtually refused to follow our requests.
Then one day, while my mother was babysitting our toddler, she wiped him down with one of her own wash cloths instead of the one I’d sent with him. He promptly broke out in those large red bumps that’d become all too familiar to us before we learned to adjust the way we did things. She felt horrible but it was a lesson learned.
Since then I’ve had a child that wasn’t affected by anything, a teenager that still has sensitive skin, a dog that’s allergic to fleas and a dog and two cats that can’t handle grain. And even if you’re lucky to never have experienced any of this, what you put into your environment matters. Even if you don’t feel the impact right away.
That’s why today I’m careful about every product I use from the paints that I work with to the laundry detergent we use. It’s hard to catch everything but it feels so good when you know that you’re doing something good for your family. And you’re pets.
When the opportunity to try Skout’s Honor presented itself I was immediately smitten with their brand. Environmentally and socially conscious they make all-natural, non-toxic products that are plant-derived and earth-friendly, biodegradable and cruelty free. And they donate a day’s worth of food to an animal shelter with every product sold!
Best of all, their products are safe for pets, family and virtually every where in your home.
The question is, do they work? Here’s my experience with Skout’s Honor products in and around my home.
Skout’s Honor Litter Box Deodorizer
Even if you clean out your litter box everyday and completely replace all the litter at the end of the week, you’re still going to have a smelly litter box. I’m over here raising my hand because I am so guilty. I mean, think about it, that plastic absorbs All. The. Smells.
Indoor cats are new to me. They are so cute and so much fun. And they. stink. so. much. I recently began using the Skout’s Honor Litter Box Deordorizer to completely soak the inside of my empty litter box each week. I allow it to sit until dry, replace the litter and go on about my day. And my cats go on about their business without harsh chemical smells from products containing bleach in their litter box.
Skout’s Honor Urine & Odor Destroyer
Speaking of cats… Apparently, cats begat other cats. And other cats begat still more cats (even when said cats are fixed!).
And even though we live in the middle of nowhere we somehow have a male feral cat that has taken up residence here. He gets just close enough to the house to stare longingly into our windows on cold nights and swear in kitteh language at my pampered cats. He also eats any inadvertently left-out trash and routinely marks (sprays his male stinkage) all over my newly made-over front porch. But he takes good care of my chickens and keeps away any ill-intentioned animals so he gets to stay. His stink does not.
I have literally tried every single thing I could think of to get rid of this odor, it’s the first thing you smell at our front door. Not a great first impression.
So I started spraying Skout’s Honor Urine and Odor Destroyer on all of my outdoor furnishings and even on his spray marking stains on our concrete. Not only does it no longer smell but he hasn’t felt the need to come back and spray again since!
And guess what boys and girls (especially boys), it also works great in people bathrooms. If you have boys, you have urine in secret places that you’ve never even thought of before. Rather than disassembling your toilet just spray this in the most offensive of places in between and after thorough cleanings and you’ll never have to have a dedicated ‘Boy Toilet’ in your home again.
You can even add it to your laundry to eliminate urine odor in kids’ clothes! What?!
Skout’s Honor Stain & Odor Remover
Something no one ever told me about indoor cats is just how much they vomit. Kids and dogs vomit, too but generally only when something is wrong. I think cats just do it as part of their job.
My guess is, however, that you don’t want me to share pictures of any of those aforementioned incidents even though my week has consisted of cleaning up every single one. So, instead, I’m going to point out to you how nice it is to not have to have a different product for every single stain your home encounters.
Recently I was trying out a new recipe that called for red cooking wine. {I’m going to stop right here for a PSA and let you know that red cooking wine is not a good substitute for red drinking wine when you run out. So my advice is to just go ahead and get red drinking wine. Two birds, one stone.}
Anyway, I was trying to be fancy and take pictures while cooking and got this salty excuse for red wine all over my new white farmhouse-y kitchen towels (read: photo props). And after my week of cleaning up one vomit stain after another I welcomed the opportunity to clean up something way less gross if less forgiving. I sprayed on Skout’s Honor Stain and Odor Remover, gave it a good soaking, blotted it with a paper towel…
And voila! No more stain and way more fun that the stomach flu.
Skout’s Honor Odor Eliminator
I wouldn’t trade indoor pets (or kids who get the stomach flu) for anything in the world but I definitely wish they stank less.
I found Jake on the roadside over 13 years ago. He was so small he fit into the palm of my hand. Being a mutt I’m not sure what kind he is but I’m pretty sure he’s a duck, beaver, pig mix. I have to give him a bath with a decreasing cleanser because his coat was evidently made for being submerged under water for a lifetime. He was once an outside dog but is spending his retirement years inside. By the end of the week his bed is covered in his short hairs (don’t ever let anyone tell you short-haired dogs don’t shed!) and he smells like Babe.
I thought I’d be spending the next several years just dealing with it since I couldn’t possibly bathe him or wash his linens any more often that I already was. Then this little miracle arrived: Skout’s Honor Odor Eliminator. I can spray his bedding with it throughout the week and I don’t even have to worry about it being harmful to the old man!
And that got me to thinking….what about soccer gear?
Teenage boys’ bedrooms?
And you know what? I have a whole arsenal of stain and odor destroying products that I can use all over my house with even the smallest members of our family present. I no longer have to worry about stubborn stains and strong odors but more importantly I no longer have to worry about exposing my family to toxic chemicals to take care of them. I feel really good about that and so will you!

I just bought Skout’s Honor Urine Eliminator spray and LOVE it. It seems to work so much better than other products I have tried. My parents are planning to pick some up while they pet sit as well. Thanks for the info about the other products; the odor eliminator sounds like just what our couch needs.

I TOTALLY agree! I was amazed. Our dog had an accident in our bedroom the other day. I quickly picked up the mess but you know how the smell still kind of lingers even after you’ve removed the “stuff”? I immediately sprayed the area with Skout’s Honor. Both my husband and I walked back into the room just minutes later and were amazed, there was NO smell. It’s amazing stuff!
