Don’t let the presentation fool you! I am just as behind in this whole holiday game as you are. That’s why today I am showing how to create an adorable advent calendar with things you probably already have around the house! And you how smart you were to not throw away those toilet paper tubes ‘because I might need them for a project one day’.
{Don’t worry, if you’re not a semi-hoarder like I am and you didn’t keep your toilet paper rolls, you can still do this project. Promise. Just keep that in mind the next time you head to the trash with these sacred objects of limitless crafting possibilities!}
If you’ll be sending Cousin Jerry’s and Aunt Lily’s gifts via post this year, you’ll want to wrap them up extra special. You can do that with Duck Brand® EZ Start Printed Packaging Tape available in Peppermint or Ornament themes for the holiday (and Daisy or Paisley so you can make things cute all year long).
That way they’ll still feel special even though you aren’t there to give it to them in person. And also because you’ll have holiday themed tape left over for your projects. Creativity is never stifled by the Duck!
If you haven’t been saving up your toilet paper tubes you can quickly knock this project out by using longer paper towel rolls instead. Just make sure to cut them down to toilet paper tube size instead. They are the perfect size for making the treat boxes for this project. Then just add a strip of this adorable tape down the center of your roll.
Then take your scissors and cut four slits on the top and bottom of the roll just down to where the tape starts. It’ll help to form the box shape if you try and keep the slits evenly spaced and line them up top to bottom but it isn’t absolutely necessary.
Now you’ll simply fold your flaps in to form a box.
Fill it with small candies, toys, happy messages or a little bit of everything.
To keep your boxes closed but make them easy to open, tie them up with a little string. Baker’s Twine is always my first choice!
Make sure to twist it along the bottom and tie securely at the top to make sure both ends stay closed.
Don’t forget the numbers! I used these little round metal rim tags and some number stamps to make mine but you can use anything you already have on hand.
What you decide to hang your treat boxes on is entirely up to you. In the spirit of using what I had on hand, I decided to use some wood scraps from other projects and some left over paint to create a simple but modern Christmas tree. I added clear fishing twine to the back and wire ornament hangers to the boxes for hanging.
This Christmas I am grateful to the Duck Brand® for inspiring the Advent Calendar I’ve always wanted. Even though Christmas is quickly approaching it’s not too late to whip out this adorable project and it’s a great one to do with the kids!
