It’s not very often that I have a hard time painting something. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I don’t have to paint everything. I just usually want to, need, have to – MUST. But for this chest of drawers, it was different.
Sure he stunk to high heaven (that’s Southern for – it stinks so bad you could smell all the way up there in Heaven! – just in case you were wondering.)
And sure his finish was far from being pristine, even though it’s hard to tell it from how photogenic he was, but there was just something about him. I knew I wanted to paint him but I didn’t want to completely cover him up.
If he really were a he, I imagined him being worldly and well traveled.
Sophisticated but still fun.
I added some fun chevron wrapping paper that I found at TJ Maxx to the inside of the two top drawers using Mod Podge – since they still looked ugly even after being thoroughly cleaned. It’s one of the easiest ways to dress up a not so pretty drawer!
He got two coats of custom mixed milk pain.
The first coat a mixture of 1 part Luckett’s Green to 1 part French Enamel.
The second coat was done in Flow Blue.
I love, love, love the variegation of texture and color that you get from milk pain. Not to mention the chippy perfection and distressing!
Finally, he was given a couple coats of Hemp Oil on both the painted and unpainted areas for extra durability and rejuvenation. Totally works for him, don’t you think?
If you’ve been around long enough to remember the very first farmtable we built for our dining room (Oh Sheila!) then you might know that I have a habit of being inspired by music when redoing my pieces. I thought it might be fun to share the inspiration song for Maps.

I REALLY like it – that color of blue is right up my alley (that’s northern for something….not sure what)!
Curious. How did you get rid of the stink?????

I love that blue too Rebecca! We say right up my alley and no idea what it actually means either. 😉
Other than thoroughly scrubbing it down with baking soda, after it dried I stuffed it with newspaper and dryer sheets. Did the trick! Thank you!
